Poppies galore / Makowe szaleństwo

Image
As you may remember I've spent a weekend at the herbal botanical garden (you can see this place HERE ). And here comes the first result - poppies! As you may guess there were all the different kinds of poppies. From the most popular red poppies to the little California poppy gems: Od naszych polnych, czerwonych po kalifornijskie żółciutkie: But much to my surprise it wasn't the beauty of colors which made me to stitch the poppies art quilt. It was the drama of this: Ale ku mojemu zaskoczeniu, to nie kolory natchnęły mnie do uszycia makowej tkaniny. Inspiracja przyszła z tyvh dramatycznych makóweczek: Not so sharp picture (the sharp ones are by Agnieszka Jarczyńska) but those fresh poppy pods made me eager to stitch. Zdjęcie nieostre

Kupala Night / Noc Świętojańska

Image
You guessed it right - the idea for "Kupala Night" was born immediately after I finished my "Three Graces of Spring" :) Zgadliście - pomysł na "Noc Świętojańską" urodził się zaraz po skończeniu "Trzech wiosennych Gracjii" :) Kupala Night is a Slavic celebration of ancient pagan origin marking the end of the summer solstice and  the beginning of the harvest (midsummer). The arrival of summer is celebrated on St. John’s Eve in Poland  and it is an interesting mix of pagan and Christian influences. It is a magical night so all my efforts went to  convey this magic with fabrics and threads (and some beads too). The plants and herbs gathered on Kupala eve were believed that could protect one from the evil forces  of nature and even cure illnesses in humans and animals. Bonfires are thought to be benefic

Poppy seeds / Sieje baba mak

Image
Just when I published my previous post about the Earth as a poppy seed, it occurred to me that I have to spend some more creative time with poppies. I've  started with old botanical illustrations to see what Medieval poppy looked like. Considering the many different kinds of poppies it seems that nothing has changed. It is one of the plants easy recognizable no matter the era. To chyba jedna z łatwiej rozpoznawalnych roślin bez względu na epokę. While going through the books I learned a lot about all the different values of this very common plant. It was broadly cultivated both for nutritional and medicinal reasons. Called "the plant of joy" (yes, I know it wa

Distant Earth view / Ziemia z daleka

Image
As seen by the poet, not NASA pictures :) The Earth is a seed—and really no more, While other seeds are planets and stars. And even if there were a hundred thousand, Each might have a house and a garden. On a poppy seed is a tiny house, Dogs bark at the poppy-seed moon, And never, never do those poppy-seed dogs Imagine that somewhere there is a world much larger. "Parable of the poppy seed" by Czesław Miłosz has sticked to me from the first read (in a high school, I guess). And now comes to mind every time I see all those fantastic NASA distant pictures of our planet. My Earth is much more about little houses and g

Modern Medieval strawberry mosaic / Średniowieczna truskawka dziś

Image
As the strawberry season just started I had to make one too. It came directly from Medieval herbarium: Skoro właśnie weszliśmy w sezon truskawkowy to trzeba było jakąś uszyć. Ta jest wzięta wprost ze średniowiecznego zielnika: And what I wrote with my stitches is same difficult to read as Medieval Latin, right? You also should know about new direction my prints took on - just look what I made out of this small textile artwork: Chciałabym Wam przy okazji pokazać zupełnie nowy kierunek w moich drukach - zobaczcie, co zrobiłam na podstawie tej małej truskaweczki: Two different prints, both based on the same elements from my textile piece. I'm still making reproductions of my artworks but now I'm able to squeeze much more fun out of them. Dwa, zupełnie różne druki oparte na tych samych elementach z oryginału. Nadal będę robiła drukowane reprodukcje swoich prac, ale teraz mo

Folklore in my gardens / Baśniowe ogrody

Image
Desperately trying to meet some deadlines I'm really happy when I manage to squeeze some little projects just for fun.  So here come the little fairies playing in the night garden. Oh well, I'm teasing you because in fact there are fairies on cards: Bardzo się cieszę, kiedy w napięty grafik terminów udaje mi się wcisnąć coś małego, ot tak  dla czystej przyjemności szycia. No, troszkę to podkolorowałam, bo wróżki są osobno na kartkach: and  "Night in the garden" with just plants. a "Noc w ogrodzie" to tylko roślinki. But as garden seems rather magical one can see it as a perfect setting for little fairies, right? And as I'm deeply into folklore right now (even wrote an article about traditional Polish folk textiles - go and read it on "Folklore Thursday" ), all the dots are connected :) A ja teraz mocn

Autumnal bouquet for Spring / Jesienny bukiet na wiosnę

Image
Last October my fellow artist Ania Sławińska and I decided to start a common project concerned with flowers. We kept it secret for some time but now we can unveil the whole story. So, the idea was to stitch a portrait of a bouquet of flowers. I asked our friend Basia to make the pretty bouquet for us and... she really went crazy with her creation :) W pażdzierniku wpadłyśmy z Anią Sławińską na pomysł wspólnego przedsięwzięcia szyciowego związanego z kwiatami. O zrobienie modelu poprosiłam Basię i trzeba przyznać, że dziewczyna zaszalała :) I wanted our model to be made by someone else because I wanted it to be same difficult/easy for Ania and me to stitch it. Of course we both didn't expect something THAT difficult :) Anyway, after months of thinking and stitching we did it: Specjalnie chciałam, żeby to był bukiet zrobiony przez kogoś
